Description

Perhaps the most recognizable of all apple varieties and certainly one of the most famous, Granny Smith is among Australia’s most iconic export products. It was discovered in Australia in the 1860s as a chance seedling growing on a compost heap. It is believed to be a spontaneous hybrid between a European wild apple and a domestic variety. Mrs. Maria Ann Smith, who discovered it, found the apple to be highly versatile – excellent for both cooking and fresh consumption. She named the new variety "Granny Smith" and is credited with spreading its popularity. By the 1960s, Granny Smith had become virtually synonymous with the word "apple." This distinctive apple attracts attention with its color, keeps exceptionally well, and offers the versatility that consumers appreciate. It is perfect for eating fresh, for baking pies, and also ideal for fruit salads (it retains its color even after being sliced).

Taste

The flavor is distinctly tart. It is a crisp apple with firm, juicy white flesh and a very sharp taste.

Fruit

The Granny Smith apple produces large to very large fruits (200–250 g) with a round to slightly conical shape. The base color is dark green, grass-like, which becomes lighter as it ripens. It is a crisp apple with firm, juicy white flesh and a very sharp flavor. However, the flesh softens slightly after prolonged storage, and when served slightly chilled, it can be very refreshing.

Pollinators

Gloster, Jonathan, Rouse, Spartan, Golden Delicious, Idared, Melrose, Richard.

Characteristics

  • Mature trees reach a height of up to 3.5 m.
  • Granny Smith is a semi-dwarf variety.
  • The apple tree has a wide-spreading crown.

Resistance

This variety is resistant to frost, hail impact, and fire blight. It shows moderate susceptibility to scab and powdery mildew, but is sensitive to viruses and phytoplasmas.

We cannot influence their maintenance and care, and consequently their further growth and development.

Our plants regularly undergo phytosanitary and vegetative inspections, therefore we do not have diseased or infected plants.

Planting fruit seedlings

Planting is done from late October to mid-April, avoiding periods of frost and drought.

Trim the roots, then the branches into 3 to 4 rings. At the beginning of March, cut the seedlings to a height of 80 - 120 cm.

Before planting, soak the plant in water for at least 2 - 3 hours.

Dig a hole, in the previously prepared soil, measuring 60 x 60 x 50 cm for the soil (40 x 40 x 40 cm) so that the roots and part of the stem are well placed, taking care that the grafting point is outside the soil.

Place the plant in the hole and cover it with dry soil, gently press it down so that it gets well between the roots.

Fertilizer and seedling roots must not be in direct contact.

Pour with 20-30 liters of water. During periods of drought in the first year of planting, it is necessary to water young seedlings more often.

Containerized seedlings can be planted throughout the year.

*Applies to bare root seedlings.
