Hayward
China (New Zealand)
-
late October to mid-November
The Hayward kiwi is the most famous and widespread female kiwi variety in the world. It originates from New Zealand, where it was selected as the best variety for commercial production due to its large fruits, stable yields, and post-harvest resistance. Today it is grown in all regions with a mild climate—from the Mediterranean, southern Europe, and the Americas to Asia—and represents the industrial standard for kiwi cultivation. Its fruits are used fresh, but also for processing into juices, jams, pastries, and desserts, as they have firm flesh, high vitamin C content, and excellent transport durability. Thanks to its thick skin and firm fibers, Hayward stores very well, often up to 5–6 months in cold storage, retaining texture and flavor. For this reason, it is the most common choice in stores and markets, and in professional orchards, it is almost exclusively used as the dominant variety, with pollinators such as Matua or Tomuri.
The taste is refreshing, harmonious, and rich, a combination of sweetness and pleasant mild acidity.
The Hayward kiwi fruit is large, oval to slightly elongated, with an average weight of 80–120 grams, and thick green-brown skin covered with fine hairs. The flesh is intensely green, juicy, and firm, with a clearly visible white center and evenly distributed small black seeds. The texture is firm at harvest, and as the fruit ripens, it becomes softer and very juicy. The fruits are highly refreshing and leave a sense of cleanliness and sweet-sour balance in the mouth.

Hayward kiwi has solid resistance: it tolerates cold well, is moderately drought-resistant, generally resistant to most pests and fungal diseases, but can be sensitive to viruses and extreme climatic conditions if neglected.
You can purchase seedlings of Kiwi Hayward (female) Tree at our garden center in the nursery located at Gornjem Crnjelovu, Glavna 65a.
Upon collection of the goods (seedlings), the Agromedžik nursery no longer has the possibility of supervision or care, and therefore cannot provide any further guarantee. Since seedlings are living beings, it is not possible to give a guarantee even a day after they leave the nursery. We cannot influence their maintenance and care, and consequently their further growth and development.
Our plants regularly undergo phytosanitary and vegetative inspections, therefore we do not have diseased or infected plants.
Planting is done from late October to mid-April, avoiding periods of frost and drought.
Trim the roots, then the branches into 3 to 4 rings. At the beginning of March, cut the seedlings to a height of 80 - 120 cm.
Before planting, soak the plant in water for at least 2 - 3 hours.
Dig a hole, in the previously prepared soil, measuring 60 x 60 x 50 cm for the soil (40 x 40 x 40 cm) so that the roots and part of the stem are well placed, taking care that the grafting point is outside the soil.
Place the plant in the hole and cover it with dry soil, gently press it down so that it gets well between the roots.
Fertilizer and seedling roots must not be in direct contact.

Pour with 20-30 liters of water. During periods of drought in the first year of planting, it is necessary to water young seedlings more often.
Containerized seedlings can be planted throughout the year.
*Applies to bare root seedlings.
