Description

Vranac is the most widespread grape variety in the Balkans. It is considered the most important grape in Montenegro and Herzegovina, and one of the most significant in North Macedonia, with substantial cultivation in Serbia as well. This variety produces dry wines of unique flavor and character, which have become a symbol of the Balkans. Vranac tolerates oak aging and bottle maturation exceptionally well, which is often necessary to tame its strong blend of tannins and acidity. Thanks to its harmonious nature, it blends well with other grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Taste

Vranac produces well-colored, harmonious wines with pleasant aroma and taste. Young wines from Vranac display a bright purple color and fruit jam aromas. Strong tannic structure provides freshness and medium to high acidity. After one or two years of aging, the purple hue develops into an intense dark ruby color, and complex aromas emerge, suggesting cinnamon, chocolate, licorice, floral notes, dark fruit, herbs, and even oak. The flavor becomes subtle and full, losing sharpness and developing a longer, smoother finish. Vranac tolerates oak and bottle aging exceptionally well, helping to balance its strong tannins and acidity.

Fruit

The grape cluster is large, weighing up to 300 grams, and moderately loose. Berries are medium-sized, oval, and black-blue in color. Ripe grapes can accumulate up to 24% sugar, producing intensely colored, palatable, and harmonious wine with distinctive characteristics.

Pollinators

Self-pollinating.

Characteristics

  • The vine exhibits fairly strong vegetative growth.
  • Young shoot tips are very hairy, yellow-green, while leaves at the ends are pinkish-green.
  • Mature shoots are grayish-brown with short internodes.
  • Leaves are medium to large, three-lobed.
  • Vranac is self-pollinating, with good and regular fertilization.
  • Pedicels are green, brittle, and long.
  • Responds well to mixed and short pruning, allowing cultivation on trellises or low forms.
  • Prefers developed training systems and mixed pruning on short canes and 6–8 bud arcs.
  • For optimal yield and quality, Vranac requires warm, moderately fertile, loose, gravelly-limestone soils and sunny southern exposure.

Resistance

Note

You can purchase seedlings of Vranac grape at our garden center in the nursery located at Gornjem Crnjelovu, Glavna 65a.

Upon collection of the goods (seedlings), the Agromedžik nursery no longer has the possibility of supervision or care, and therefore cannot provide any further guarantee. Since seedlings are living beings, it is not possible to give a guarantee even a day after they leave the nursery. We cannot influence their maintenance and care, and consequently their further growth and development.

Our plants regularly undergo phytosanitary and vegetative inspections, therefore we do not have diseased or infected plants.

Planting grapes

The depth of the pit is 40-50 cm, and the width is 30-40 cm.

First, a 5-6 cm layer of loose, fertile soil is placed at the bottom of the pit.

Cut the root of the vine seedling to 10 to 12 cm from the main stem (substrate).

Insert the vine seedling into the hole at an angle of 45°. The connection point of the coil should be 2-3 cm above the ground surface.

Once the seedling is placed in the hole, a layer of crumbly, fertile, and moderately moist soil is spread over the roots. The applied soil layer is then firmly pressed down.

The graft is supported by hand below the grafting point so that it does not move during pressing and compacting.

After the pressing and compacting of the soil is completed, the seedling is watered with 5 liters of water.

Then the remaining upper part of the hole is filled with a mixture of soil and organic fertilizer. The soil is first mixed with well-rotted manure, and then this mixture is poured into the hole and firmly compacted by pressing.

In autumn planting, apply finely crumbled soil over the planted seedling and form a mound so that only 1–2 cm of the branches remain exposed. The mound protects the seedling from freezing during the winter.

In spring planting, it is not necessary to form a mound.
