Description

Originating from Persia, the Wild Horse Chestnut is a deciduous tree from the Sapindaceae family. Valued for its beauty, it is a popular park tree capable of living up to 200 years. Its flowers, bark, and inedible fruits are used in traditional medicine. Unlike the edible Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa), its fruits are toxic if ingested, causing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, pupil dilation, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness. It is an excellent melliferous plant; bees collect significant amounts of nectar and propolis, producing over 100 kg of colorless honey per hectare that crystallizes easily.

Characteristics

  • Can reach up to 35 m in height, with a trunk diameter up to 2 m.
  • The canopy is dense and widely branched, with a well-developed but mostly shallow root system.
  • Bark is dark brown, about 1 cm thick, smooth when young, later cracking irregularly and peeling in thin flakes.
  • Twigs are thick, covered with lenticels; buds are opposite, large, glabrous, shiny, resinous, olive-brown to reddish-brown, with lighter-edged scales; terminal bud is the largest.
  • Leaves are opposite, on 15–20 cm long petioles, composed of 7 leaflets measuring 8–20 cm long and 4–10 cm wide; leaflets narrow at the base, widen before the tip, with the central leaflet being the largest; autumn coloration is golden yellow before falling.
  • Flowers are large and upright, arranged in 20–30 cm long pyramidal clusters; the calyx has 5 unequal lobes, petals are 5, white with prominent yellow and pink spots, reflexed backwards; seven stamens longer than petals; ovary superior. Bloom lasts 7–8 days in April and May after leaf emergence.

Resistance

  • Frost: Moderately frost-tolerant. Young saplings and flowers may be sensitive to late spring frosts, potentially reducing fruit formation, but mature trees generally tolerate winter temperatures well in temperate climates.
  • Drought: Moderately drought-tolerant. Prolonged extreme dry periods may slow growth and canopy development, but the deep and branched root system allows survival during limited rainfall.
  • Pests: Can be attacked by various insects, including chestnut moth (Cydia splendana), aphids, and different types of leaf beetles.
  • Diseases: Moderately susceptible, particularly to Chestnut Blight (Cryphonectria parasitica), which damages bark and inner wood; leaf fungal diseases causing spotting and defoliation; and root diseases in poorly drained or waterlogged soils.

Note

You can purchase seedlings of Wild Horse Chestnut 4-year at our garden center in the nursery located at Gornjem Crnjelovu, Glavna 65a.

Upon collection of the goods (seedlings), the Agromedžik nursery no longer has the possibility of supervision or care, and therefore cannot provide any further guarantee. Since seedlings are living beings, it is not possible to give a guarantee even a day after they leave the nursery. We cannot influence their maintenance and care, and consequently their further growth and development.

Our plants regularly undergo phytosanitary and vegetative inspections, therefore we do not have diseased or infected plants.

Planting fruit seedlings

Planting is done from late October to mid-April, avoiding periods of frost and drought.

Trim the roots, then the branches into 3 to 4 rings. At the beginning of March, cut the seedlings to a height of 80 - 120 cm.

Before planting, soak the plant in water for at least 2 - 3 hours.

Dig a hole, in the previously prepared soil, measuring 60 x 60 x 50 cm for the soil (40 x 40 x 40 cm) so that the roots and part of the stem are well placed, taking care that the grafting point is outside the soil.

Place the plant in the hole and cover it with dry soil, gently press it down so that it gets well between the roots.

Fertilizer and seedling roots must not be in direct contact.

Pour with 20-30 liters of water. During periods of drought in the first year of planting, it is necessary to water young seedlings more often.

Containerized seedlings can be planted throughout the year.

*Applies to bare root seedlings.
