Description

The Japanese Plum originates from China and was later domesticated and widely cultivated in Japan, where many modern varieties were developed. Today, numerous hybrids have been selected for fruit size, color, sweetness, and early ripening. Japanese plums are popular worldwide due to their large, juicy, and flavorful fruits. They are primarily consumed fresh but are also suitable for jams, compotes, desserts, drying, and plum wine. The fruit is highly nutritious and rich in antioxidants.

Interesting fact: Japanese plum trees grow rapidly and bear fruit early, making them attractive for both commercial orchards and home gardens. The fruits are best consumed fresh or processed shortly after harvest, as they have a moderate storage life.

Taste

Sweet, juicy, mildly aromatic, with a delicate acidity that enhances freshness and flavor.

Fruit

The fruit is oval to slightly egg-shaped, medium to large, weighing 40–60 g. The skin is thin, smooth, ranging from yellow-orange to reddish or deep purple, with a light waxy coating that protects the fruit. The flesh is juicy, aromatic, light yellow to orange, semi-freestone. The stone is single, oval, smooth, and separates easily from the flesh, making it suitable for processing. Fruits are ideal for fresh consumption, as well as for jams, compotes, juices, and drying, retaining their quality and aroma after processing.

Characteristics

  • Height: Medium to tall, typically 4–6 meters, vigorous growth.
  • Crown type: Spreading to slightly upright, moderately dense; allows good sunlight penetration and air circulation, reducing disease risk.
  • Trunk: Strong, gray-brown bark, moderately roughening with age; well-formed central leader if properly pruned.
  • Leaves: Medium to large, elliptical, dark green, finely serrated edges, slightly glossy.
  • Flowers: White to pale pink, appearing in early spring, usually in clusters of 2–5; blooms slightly earlier than some other local plum varieties.
  • Fruit buds: Form on one-year-old wood, strong fruiting potential with proper pollination.
  • Root system: Deep, moderately strong, tolerant of well-drained soils; adapts to heavier soils if drainage is good.
  • Planting: Best propagated as grafted trees, spaced 4–5 meters apart to allow full crown development.
  • Soil preference: Fertile, well-drained loamy soil; tolerates slightly less fertile soils with moderate yield reduction.
  • Adaptability: Thrives in temperate climates; young trees may need protection from late spring frosts.
  • Maintenance: Requires regular pruning and thinning for optimal fruit size, quality, and tree health.

Resistance

  • Frost: Moderate tolerance; young trees may need protection from late spring frosts.
  • Pests: Susceptible to plum moth, aphids, and other common plum pests.
  • Diseases: Some varieties are sensitive to plum pox virus; moderate resistance to fungal diseases depending on local management.

Planting fruit seedlings

Planting is done from late October to mid-April, avoiding periods of frost and drought.

Trim the roots, then the branches into 3 to 4 rings. At the beginning of March, cut the seedlings to a height of 80 - 120 cm.

Before planting, soak the plant in water for at least 2 - 3 hours.

Dig a hole, in the previously prepared soil, measuring 60 x 60 x 50 cm for the soil (40 x 40 x 40 cm) so that the roots and part of the stem are well placed, taking care that the grafting point is outside the soil.

Place the plant in the hole and cover it with dry soil, gently press it down so that it gets well between the roots.

Fertilizer and seedling roots must not be in direct contact.

Pour with 20-30 liters of water. During periods of drought in the first year of planting, it is necessary to water young seedlings more often.

Containerized seedlings can be planted throughout the year.

*Applies to bare root seedlings.
